What is a Censer?

A censer, also called a perfume burner or pastille burner (and sometimes a thurible or tiraz) is a vessel designed for burning incense or perfume. It varies greatly in form, size, and material of construction. Censers have religious and cultural connotations, which often influence their design and decoration. They can be simple, earthenware bowls suspended from chains to intricately carved silver or gold vessels. Censers for stick incense can be as simple as a long plate with a perforated end. In Islam, a censer is called a tiraz. In the Latin liturgy, a censer is called the thurible.
